Die Strand - 'n eko-gemeente

Project: Ekologie, Category: Dokdiek Gesels, Artikels

Hy is mos U verteenwoordiger.

U laat hom soos ’n groot leier oor U handewerk regeer.

Strand - an eco-congregation

Jippy, Praise the Lord, brothers and sisters, rejoice our congregation has become an eco-congregation!

On our Sunday of Compassion, 8 September 2013 , we introduced a specific Earth Keepers’ ministry within our congregation. As chairperson of the Committee for Compassion I first thanked the church members present for their abundant support for our food care, clothing care, dependency care (drug-and-alcohol) (CAD) , our senior citizens care, our educational, work seeking and finding lodging care and even our care to provide transport for needy people going to clinics, hospitals and meetings, but then pointed out to them that we had neglected the first commandment God has given us in Gen.1:28 (to Adam and Eve) and Gen.9:1-4 (to Noah and his sons) to take care , in His name, of the world we live in.

I informed the congregation about what happened at the March 2013 Earth Keepers Conference and made good use of the material provided by Safcei to illustrate that “Believers work together to take care of the Living Earth “.

Here at Die Strand congregation, where more than 60 % of the members are 60+, we will build on what already exists - a fledging recycling effort to earn money for our missionary outreach in Limpopo. We will join a regular monthly beach cleanup effort and become a member of the Lourens River Conservation Society to maintain the catchment in its natural condition. We will assist the envisaged Central Strand Improvement District to clean the streets and parks. We are considering to establish vegetable gardens and to plant trees at suitable places.

Our minister followed up my address with an applicable sermon on the theme: “You, Lord, put us in charge”, using Psalm 8:4-9 as his text.

I look up at your macro-skies, dark and enormous,
your handmade sky-jewelry,
Moon and stars mounted in their settings.
Then I look at my micro-self and wonder,
Why do you bother with us?
Why take a second look our way?

Yet we’ve so narrowly missed being gods,
bright with Eden’s dawn light.
You put us in charge of your handcrafted world,
repeated to us your Genesis-charge,
Made us lords of sheep and cattle,
even animals out in the wild,
Birds flying and fish swimming,
whales singing in the ocean deeps.

On that Sunday seven members joined the Earth Keepers ministry. We are not planning to re-invent the wheel. As shown above, we will join and strengthen existing efforts in our community.

I have since then represented the congregation at an Earth Keepers Forum at Rosebank Methodist Church to obtain information on how to address South Africa’s energy crisis from the viewpoint and abilities of a congregation. By doing all these small things we hope to take the congregation on a higher level, a level where we will ask God what does He wants us to do in the Strand area to maintain His creation and give glory to Him.

After all, it is a wonderfully satisfying commandment to work in harmony with God on this beautiful Earth’s maintenance program.
